Health Alert: Canadian Firm pulls plastic bottles

In light of the continuing controversy over bisphenol A, the Vancouver based Mountain Equipment Co-op has pulled plastic water bottles and food containers off the shelves (Full article at Reuters). Bisphenol A has been the target of extensive studies and controversies in the US. Used in the manufacture of plastic containers and can linings, including baby bottles and formula cans, this substance has been shown to leach into the contents and has led to widespread human exposure.

Bisphenol A is an environmental estrogen and has been linked to several forms of cancer as well as developmental, neural, behavioral and reproductive harm in animals. The controversy in the US seems to be centered on how much of this toxic substance is allowable. In animal testing, even low dosages have been shown to have an adverse affect.
