Women who use hormone therapy after menopause may be at a higher risk of ovarian cancer, and the risk remains elevated for up to two years after women stop taking estrogen, a new study says (study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association).
The risk of developing ovarian cancer is 38 percent higher in women who are on hormone therapy, and for those who used to take the treatment in the recent past years.
The increased risk is believed to be regardless of the hormone’s formulation (estrogen alone or estrogen- progestin combination), dosage or the administrative route.
The Women’s Health Initiative revealed that women who took hormones long-term had a greater risk of many ills including breast cancer, strokes and ovarian cancer.
